The term Cittaslow is derived from the Italian word citta (city) and the English word slow, meaning “slow city.” The Cittaslow Movement, founded in Italy in 1999, is an alliance of cities that emerged from the Slow Food movement. Its purpose is to prevent globalization from standardizing the fabric, tranquility, and lifestyle of cities, thereby erasing their local characteristics. It is an association of towns and cities that, instead of becoming homogeneous spaces shaped by globalization, seek to maintain their local identity and uniqueness while making their mark on the world stage. Sığacık, as the first town in Turkey to apply to the Cittaslow Union, has taken a step to show that development does not have to be destructive.

Sığacık is located in the Gulf of Sığacık, 3 km west of Seferihisar. In addition to its historical and natural beauties, it is positioned as a natural harbor. The name of Sığacık dates back to the period between 1521-1522, when the town was used as a refuge. The town, which once served as the capital of the Ionian civilization, competed with Ephesus at one point in history. To the west of Seferihisar, Sığacık is surrounded by mandarin orchards, with the only elevation between the town and the center being a hill called Taşdibi. At the entrance of Sığacık, visitors are greeted by its deep blue sea, the castle from the time of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a harbor that has welcomed many sailors, luxury fish restaurants by the water, a peaceful atmosphere, and a square that houses a bust of the great leader Atatürk. Sığacık, with its unique sea, has been a holiday destination for years, known for offering the tastiest fish in the Aegean and the most skilled fishermen. In addition to its 510-capacity marina suitable for yacht tourism, it is also one of the best places for various water sports, such as surfing. Akkum Beach, with its modest facilities, welcomes visitors to a wide cove where they can enjoy the day. Sığacık is home to Ekmeksiz Beach, one of Turkey’s cleanest and coldest coves. The beach is Blue Flag certified and is known for its fresh spring waters that mix with the sea from the bottom, making it colder than other coves. Additionally, it is remarkable for being sheltered from the north winds.
